2003 Patent Seminar by Omori & Yaguchi USA

U.S.-Japan Technology Management Strategies

On Wednesday, February 12, 2003, from 1 to 5 p.m., please join our seminar on technology management strategies lectured by Dr. Kotabe and Mr. Yaguchi.

<Session 1>

A tale of Two Perspectives on Global Procurement and Technology Management: U.S. vs. Japanese
Lecturer: Masaaki Kotabe

Based on his research work in global procurement and technology management, Dr. Kotabe will explore two very different operational philosophies of managing the procurement-technology link on a global basis: namely, U.S. practices based on efficiency and Japanese practices based on effectiveness.  While these two perspectives complement each other, they can also lead to two very different strategies by which U.S. and Japanese corporate executives manage technology in the value creation.  In general, efficiency-seeking firms ten to use ROE as the ultimate indicator of performance, while effectiveness-seeking firms prefer to use ROS.  Managerial implications will be offered as to under what conditions which approach tends to result in better corporate performance and how U.S. and Japanese companies can benefit from working in alliances.

<Session 2>

Technicians' Revolts against Japanese Corporations: Rules of Employees' Invention
Lecturer: Taro Yaguchi

Recently in Japan, disputes over how to treat employees’ inventions have increased.  Last year, the former in-house engineers, the one who helped develop the blue light-emitting diode and the other who contributed to developing the mass production technology for the sweetener, filed lawsuits against their former employers, after they retired from their companies, and demanded 2 billion yen.  The Japan Patent Office has recognized the issue and proposed the improvement of the employee invention treatment in order to encourage enthusiastic inventors and strengthen Japan’s competitiveness in today’s global market.  Mr. Yaguchi, who is an expert on employees’ inventions and has consulted numerous companies in Japan, will discuss the current issues on this subject and forecast the key points for the future of this matter.
